WeAre_Shift: Sam Petyt

Want to meet another one of our interns? Let us introduce you to Sam Petyt, talented graphic designer and promising youngster. He’s the one on the right..


When did you come to Shift and why?

Luckily for me I started at Precept just before Shift got up and running. I thought I was only going to be here for a couple of weeks and then they’d send me on my way back over the Byker Bridge, but lo and behold I’m still here now, which is good of them.

What is your role in Shift?

Because the main focus at Shift is collaboration, I’ve been able to try my hand across a few areas from Branding through to Type Design. Although as I’m studying Graphic Design at College, I’m often tasked with coming up with the visual side of idea generation, generally in branding.

How is the programme collaborative? Are you working with any particular discipline that you hadn’t worked with before?

We collaborate on every brief. As a group we have knowledge in a range of disciplines and when we pool all our ideas together, we’re able to make things bigger and better. It’s a continuous learning process but we’ve made it a success so far.

Before Shift, I didn’t really a clue about Advertising (although at the time I might have thought otherwise!), particularly the theory behind it and how the idea stage works. It’s been particularly interesting for me to work with those in Advertising and see how much interest they also have in design, from taking inspiration from graphic design to photography and film. Turns out it’s not just about the slogans, my bad! It’s also been cool to see the processes they use to generate thought provoking messages.

Are you learning any new skills from collaborating/ did you get to teach anyone new skills?

I’m learning all the time to be honest. From idea generation methods, how to analyse brands, through to how SEO works, it’s a constant learning process.

We often exchange digital skills with each other: some of us are better in Illustrator, some are better in Photoshop etc.. so it’s always good when you learn a shortcut or how to make something mental, it improves efficiency and creativity no end.

Has collaborating with other disciplines changed your attitude to how you work and/or working within the creative industry in general?

It’s so important these days to recognise that you need to have a knowledge of as wide a range of creative disciplines as possible, otherwise you’ll get left behind.

Before Shift, I thought I was a bit of a control freak, but I’ve found that I actually enjoy working in a group far more. Working with a team, I’ve found that my ideas are always far more considered and more successful. Even just being able to get constructive criticism on a regular basis is really important for us all, it means we can constantly improve our work.
